"Hello, D.J. I've been looking for you."
D.J. unclenched her back teeth, pasted a smile on her face, and turned to meet her ex-husband. "I heard, Rich. What could be important enough for you to chase me down here?
"I came here on some other business. Imagine my surprise when I turned the corner and found my little wife standing there."
"I'm not your wife. What do you want?"
"Tsk, tsk." Rich took a step forward, crowding D.J. against the nurses' station. "You still haven't learned any manners, have you?"
D.J. stood her ground, staring up into Rich's face with the indifferent attitude that always drove him crazy. She wondered how she could ever have found him attractive. Since she now knew what lay beneath the smooth veneer, his black Irish hair and eyes made the coldness inside her freeze colder. When Rich saw she couldn't be intimidated, as usual, he backed away. Despite his expensive silk suit and Italian shoes he was a bully and a thug, through and through. D.J. still couldn't believe she'd actually thought they could have a marriage with a future between them.
"I wanted to make sure you were all right. I read about the shooting."
D.J. rolled her eyes. "Don't insult me, Rich. You could care less about me or my job. Lou told me you were at the station yesterday. What do you want this time?"
